What is the Mirena IUD?

Mirena is a small T-shaped device placed inside the uterus. It slowly releases a progestin hormone called levonorgestrel. It is a long-acting, reversible method of contraception. It can be removed at any time by a doctor, and fertility usually returns after removal.

Mirena works mainly by thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining. Doctors also use it for some people with heavy periods. How long it can stay in place depends on the use; the doctor will tell you the recommended time for your situation.

Who is the Mirena IUD for?

• People who want long-term contraception without taking a daily pill
• People with heavy or painful periods, after evaluation by a doctor
• People who cannot take estrogen
• People who have given birth and people who have not

Mirena may not be suitable if you are pregnant, have an active pelvic infection, certain uterine shape problems, or unexplained bleeding. The doctor checks this first.

How does Mirena insertion work at the clinic?

1.  Consultation: Dr. Eun reviews your health history in English and explains Mirena and other options.
2. Checks before insertion: A pregnancy test and a pelvic ultrasound may be done. STI testing or a Pap test may be suggested if needed.
3. Insertion: The device is placed through the cervix into the uterus using a thin tube. The procedure usually takes a few minutes. Many people feel cramping during and after insertion.
4. Position check: An ultrasound may be used to confirm the position.
5. Follow-up: A check visit is usually recommended after your next period, and then as advised.

Timing within your cycle matters. Ask the clinic when you book.

What are the side effects and risks?

• Cramping and spotting for some days after insertion
• Irregular bleeding in the first months; periods often become lighter over time, and some people stop having periods
• Possible hormonal effects such as acne, breast tenderness or mood changes
• Uncommon risks: the device moving out of place or coming out, infection soon after insertion, and, rarely, perforation of the uterus

Contact a doctor if you have fever, severe pain, unusual discharge, or cannot feel the strings. Individual results vary. Mirena does not protect against STIs.

How do I prepare for a Mirena insertion?

• Note the first day of your last period.
• Use condoms or another method until your appointment, so a pregnancy can be ruled out.
• Eat a light meal before the visit.
• Ask the doctor whether to take a pain reliever beforehand.

Can I get this care in English?

Yes. The whole Mirena process, from consultation to follow-up, can be explained in English. Your consultation is with Dr. Eun Mi-na, a female board-certified OB-GYN who speaks English and sees patients in English. If you have medical documents from another country, such as test results, prescriptions or vaccination records, bring them to your visit. Records in English are fine. If you need an English medical certificate or other documents for insurance, tell the clinic before you leave.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Mirena and Kyleena?

Both are hormonal IUDs that release levonorgestrel. Mirena contains a higher hormone dose and is also used for heavy periods. Kyleena is slightly smaller with a lower dose. The doctor helps you choose based on your needs.

Does Mirena insertion hurt?

Many people feel cramping during insertion and for a short time after. The feeling varies from person to person. You can ask the doctor about taking a pain reliever before the procedure.

Can I travel or fly after getting Mirena?

Yes, most people return to normal activities soon after insertion. If you plan to leave Korea, try to schedule the follow-up check before you go, or arrange a check with a doctor in your next country.

Can Mirena be removed in Korea?

Is Mirena covered by NHIS?

When used only for contraception, Mirena is generally not covered. Coverage may apply for certain medical reasons. The posted out-of-pocket price is 350,000 KRW. Prices may change; confirm with the clinic.
