Cervicitis: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment in Seoul
Quick answer: Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It is often caused by infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhea and may cause discharge or bleeding after sex, but many people have no symptoms. At Eunice Women's Clinic near Seongsu Station, an English-speaking female OB-GYN can test for the cause and discuss treatment.
What is cervicitis?
The cervix is the narrow lower end of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Cervicitis means the cervix is inflamed. It is common and is usually found during a pelvic exam, sometimes in people who have no symptoms. Cervicitis is on the list of conditions Eunice Women's Clinic treats as part of general gynecology.
What are the symptoms of cervicitis?
- Yellow, cloudy, or increased vaginal discharge
- Bleeding or spotting after sex or between periods
- Pain during sex
- Discomfort when urinating
- Feeling of pressure or mild pain in the pelvis
Many people with cervicitis have no symptoms at all. It may be noticed during a routine Pap smear or checkup.
What causes cervicitis?
Infectious causes are the most common, especially in younger people and those with new partners:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea
- Trichomoniasis and Mycoplasma genitalium
- Genital herpes
- Bacterial vaginosis in some cases
Non-infectious causes include irritation or allergy to products such as spermicides or latex, a forgotten tampon or other object, and hormonal changes. In some cases, no cause is found.
When should I see a doctor?
See a gynecologist if you have bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, new discharge, or pain during sex, or if a partner has been diagnosed with an STI. Untreated infectious cervicitis can spread upward and cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which can affect future fertility. Seek care the same day if you have fever or strong pelvic pain.
How is cervicitis diagnosed at the clinic?
During a speculum exam, the doctor looks at the cervix for redness, swelling, discharge, or easy bleeding when touched. Swabs from the cervix and vagina are then tested to find the cause. Common tests include:
- A multi-pathogen PCR panel through STD testing(for example chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, and mycoplasma)
- A vaginal swab for bacterial vaginosis and yeast
- A Pap smear and HPV test if cervical screening is due, because bleeding after sex should also be checked for cervical changes
How is cervicitis treated?
If an infection is likely, the doctor may start antibiotics on the day of the visit, before all results are back, and adjust treatment when results arrive. The specific antibiotic depends on the organism found. If an STI is diagnosed, recent sexual partners should also be tested and treated, and you should avoid sex until treatment is complete. If the cause is irritation, stopping the trigger is usually enough. Follow-up testing may be recommended. Individual results vary.
How can I lower my risk of cervicitis?
- Use condoms, especially with new partners.
- Get STI testing with each new partner or as advised.
- Avoid douching and products that irritate the vagina.
- Keep up with regular cervical screening.

Frequently asked questions
Is cervicitis the same as an STI?
Not always. Cervicitis describes inflammation of the cervix. STIs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea are common causes, but irritation, allergy, and other factors can also cause it. Testing shows the cause.
Can cervicitis cause bleeding after sex?
Yes. An inflamed cervix bleeds more easily when touched, so spotting after sex is a common sign. Bleeding after sex should always be checked, because there are other possible causes, including cervical polyps and cervical changes.
Is cervicitis related to cervical cancer?
Cervicitis itself is not cancer and does not directly cause cancer. However, some symptoms overlap, so the doctor may recommend a Pap smear and HPV test if you are due for screening.
Does my partner need treatment?
If an STI is found, recent partners should be tested and treated even without symptoms. If the cause is not an infection, partner treatment is usually not needed.
Can cervicitis come back?
Yes, especially if a partner was not treated or if you have a new exposure. Retesting after a few months is often recommended after chlamydia or gonorrhea.
