Booking a Clinic in Korea with Naver Booking, KakaoTalk, and Map Apps

Why do Korean clinics use Naver and Kakao?

Naver and Kakao are two of Korea's largest internet platforms. Naver is the most widely used search portal, and Naver Map is a popular map app. KakaoTalk is the messaging app used by almost everyone in Korea, and KakaoMap is its map service. Many clinics use these platforms for bookings and questions because patients already have the apps. For foreigners, online and chat booking is often easier than a phone call in Korean.

Which apps should I install?

•  Naver Map: for finding clinics, hours, directions, and, where available, booking. The app offers an English interface setting, although clinic details are usually in Korean.
• KakaoTalk: for messaging clinics through their official channels.
• KakaoMap: an alternative map with public transit directions.
• A translation app: such as Papago (made by Naver) or another app with camera translation.

Global map apps often have limited walking and driving directions in Korea, so local map apps are usually more accurate for travel inside Seoul.

How does Naver Booking work?

Naver Booking (네이버 예약) is a reservation service that many businesses, including clinics, connect to their Naver place page. In general:

1. Search the clinic name in Naver Map or the Naver app. Korean names give the most accurate results.
2. Open the clinic's place page. It usually shows the address, hours, phone number, photos, and notices.
3. If the clinic accepts Naver Booking, the place page shows a booking (예약) option.
4. Choose a service type if asked, then pick a date and time from the available slots.
5. Enter your details and any request. You can write a short note in English, for example, "English consultation, first visit, irregular periods."
6. You receive a confirmation in the app, and sometimes by text message. Some bookings need the clinic to confirm first.

You need a Naver account to book. Creating an account may require phone verification, and some features may work only with a Korean phone number. If you cannot create an account, use KakaoTalk or phone instead.

How do KakaoTalk channels work?

A KakaoTalk channel is an official business account inside KakaoTalk. Clinics use channels to answer questions, confirm bookings, and send notices. In general:

1. Open KakaoTalk and use the search function. Type the clinic's name.
2. Open the clinic's channel profile and add it as a friend.
3. Start a one-to-one chat with the channel.
4. Send your request: preferred date and time, reason for the visit, and your name as it appears on your ID.

Replies usually come during clinic opening hours. Messages sent late at night are usually answered the next working day. Chat is useful because you can write in English or paste a translation, and you have a written record.

What should I write in my booking message?

• Full name (as on your residence card or passport)
• Date of birth
• Phone number
• Preferred dates and times, with one or two alternatives
• Reason for the visit in one sentence
• Whether you have Korean national insurance
• A request for an English consultation, if needed

Can I just call?

Yes. Phone booking is still common. Reception staff at many clinics speak mainly Korean, so prepare a few phrases or ask a Korean-speaking friend to help. How do I use map apps to get to the clinic?

Naver Map and KakaoMap both give subway, bus, walking, and taxi routes, with estimated travel times. You can type a Korean address or the clinic name. Save the clinic as a favorite so you can find it quickly on the day. Both apps show the recommended subway exit, which is useful in large stations.

Is Naver Map available in English?
