Cervical Cancer Screening in Korea: A Guide for Foreign Women

Why is cervical screening important?

How does the Korean national screening program work?
As of 2026, the NHIS national cancer screening program offers cervical cancer screening every two years for eligible members from age 20. Eligibility is usually decided by birth year: people born in even years are invited in even years, and people born in odd years in odd years. NHIS sends notices, and you can check your eligibility through NHIS.

What are the different screening tests?

Your home country may use a different system. For example, some countries use HPV testing first and screen every five years. If you were screened abroad, bring your last result so the doctor can suggest a sensible schedule.
How much does screening cost without the national program?

How do I prepare for a Pap test?
- Book a day when you are not having your period. Mid-cycle is often ideal.
- For about 24 to 48 hours before, avoid sex, vaginal medicines, lubricants, and douching, unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Tell the doctor if you might be pregnant, have had a hysterectomy, or have had abnormal results before.
The test itself takes only a few minutes. You may feel pressure or brief discomfort. Light spotting afterward can happen.
What if my result is abnormal?
An abnormal result does not mean you have cancer. Most abnormal results are minor cell changes, often linked to HPV, and many clear on their own. Can I be screened in English?

What if I am over 65 or have had a hysterectomy?
Screening needs change with age and surgical history. Women who have had a total hysterectomy for non-cancer reasons may no longer need cervical screening, while others still do. Older women with a history of normal results may be able to stop screening. Because guidelines differ between countries, ask the doctor to review your personal history.
Should I also get the HPV vaccine?
