What is a pelvic ultrasound?
A pelvic ultrasound is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the organs in the lower abdomen. It does not use radiation. In gynecology, it is used to look at the uterus, the lining of the uterus (endometrium), the ovaries and the area around them.
There are two main ways to do a pelvic ultrasound:
- Transvaginal ultrasound: a thin probe is placed in the vagina. This usually gives the clearest view of the uterus and ovaries.
- Transabdominal ultrasound: the probe moves over the lower belly. This is often used for women who have never had sex, or when a wider view is needed.
Who is a pelvic ultrasound for?
- Women with pelvic pain, painful periods or heavy bleeding
- Women with irregular periods or suspected polycystic ovaries
- Checking for uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, ovarian cysts or signs of endometriosis
- Checking IUD position
- Pregnancy planning, ovulation tracking, or confirming early pregnancy
- Routine checkups as part of a women's health checkup
How is a pelvic ultrasound done at the clinic?
- Consultation: the doctor asks about your symptoms and your cycle, and chooses the type of scan.
- Preparation: for a transvaginal scan you empty your bladder and undress from the waist down in private. For a transabdominal scan the doctor may ask you to have a fuller bladder.
- Scan: the probe is covered and lubricated. Dr. Eun moves it gently to see each organ. The scan usually takes several minutes.
- Explanation: the doctor shows you the screen and explains what she sees in English.
How should I prepare?
- For a transvaginal scan, please empty your bladder first.
- For a transabdominal scan, drinking water beforehand may be requested. Ask the clinic when you book.
- You can usually have a scan during your period if it is needed for your symptoms.
- Some checks, such as the endometrium or ovulation, are timed to a specific day of your cycle. The doctor will tell you which day to come.
When will I get my results?
Ultrasound results are immediate. The doctor explains the findings during the same visit. If you need copies of the images, an imaging CD is available for 10,000 KRW.

Can I have this done in English?

Is a transvaginal ultrasound necessary, or can it be done over the belly?
A transvaginal scan usually shows the uterus and ovaries more clearly. If you have never had sex or prefer not to, tell the doctor. A transabdominal scan can be used instead in many cases.
Is pelvic ultrasound covered by NHIS?
Many gynecologic ultrasounds are covered by NHIS when medically indicated, such as for symptoms or a suspected condition. Routine scans without a medical reason are usually not covered and cost 70,000 KRW.
Can an ultrasound find fibroids and ovarian cysts?
Yes. Ultrasound is a common first test for fibroids, ovarian cysts and adenomyosis. Some conditions, such as endometriosis, may need more tests, and ultrasound can look normal even when symptoms are present.
Can I get a copy of my ultrasound images?
Yes. An imaging CD is available for 10,000 KRW. Printed images and an English medical certificate can also be requested. Ask at the front desk. Bringing images to another doctor can help with follow-up care.
