What is a transvaginal ultrasound?
A transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) is a type of pelvic ultrasound. A slim probe, about the width of two fingers, is covered with a disposable cover and gel, and placed a short distance into the vagina. Because the probe is close to the uterus and ovaries, the images are usually clearer than a scan over the belly. It does not use radiation.
What can a transvaginal ultrasound check?
- The size and shape of the uterus and the thickness of the endometrium
- Fibroids, adenomyosis and polyps
- Ovarian cysts and the pattern of follicles, for example in PCOS
- Follicle growth and ovulation timing during ovulation induction
- Early pregnancy location and heartbeat (see early pregnancy ultrasound)
- IUD position
Who is it for?
It is commonly used for women with pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, irregular periods, fertility planning or early pregnancy. If you have never had sex, or you feel uncomfortable with an internal scan, tell the doctor. A transabdominal scan can often be used instead.
How is the scan done at the clinic?
- Explanation: Dr. Eun explains the scan in English and answers questions before starting.
- Empty bladder: you use the restroom first.
- Privacy: you undress from the waist down in a private area and lie on the exam chair with a cover.
- Scan: the doctor gently inserts the covered probe and moves it slightly to see each organ. You may feel pressure. The scan usually takes several minutes.
- Results: you can watch the screen while the doctor explains what she sees.
How should I prepare?
- Empty your bladder just before the scan.
- No fasting is needed.
- A scan can be done during your period if needed, but for some purposes the doctor may prefer a specific cycle day.
- Wear clothes that are easy to change.
Is a transvaginal ultrasound uncomfortable?
Most women feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Breathing slowly and relaxing the pelvic muscles helps. Tell the doctor at any time if you want her to stop or slow down. Your comfort is important and you can ask questions throughout.
When will I get my results?
Ultrasound results are immediate. The doctor explains the findings during the visit and discusses the next steps.
