What is an early pregnancy ultrasound?
An early pregnancy ultrasound is a scan done in the first trimester, usually by the transvaginal route in the first weeks because it gives a clearer view. It uses sound waves, not radiation. It can check:
- That the pregnancy is inside the uterus (not an ectopic pregnancy)
- The gestational sac and yolk sac
- The embryo and its heartbeat
- The number of embryos
- The size of the embryo, to estimate gestational age and due date
- The uterus and ovaries, for example fibroids or cysts

How is the scan done at the clinic?
